BenQ’s Make-in-India Drive

Expects half of its revenue from India-made products by 2027

BenQ – the Taiwanese visual solutions major with strong business focus on India – is apparently getting bullish about its business prospects from its Make-in-India initiative. While initiating measures to ramp up its ambitious programme to increase the ‘Make-in-India’ portfolio, the company hopes to earn half of its India revenues from locally manufactured products.

In a media interaction on Wednesday – where it launched its MA Series for Apple and Mac users – the BenQ Managing Director for India and South Asia Rajeev Singh said the company’s intent is to gradually increasing the number of Make in India models in segments like monitors, projectors and interactive flat panels (IFPs) through its local OEM partners.

BenQ, which began rolling out the Made-in-India monitors earlier this year, expects that over a period of three years, nearly half the numbers sold in India would be domestically manufactured. The company revenues from the Make-in-India products such as IFPs and projectors currently hover around ₹300 crore.

BenQ India will complete 25 years of business presence this year, and expects to exceed ₹1000 crore revenues.

Rajeev Singh

“We are looking at close to Rs 500 crore from Make in India products by next year,” Rajeev Singh told mediapersons. “By 2027, almost half of our revenue will come from locally manufactured products.”

BenQ India chief’s bullish approach assumes significance in the light of IDC’s bearish forecast for the monitor industry this year, for India, in particular. In a recent report, the IDC indicated a potential short-term dip in monitor sales in the country.

Equally significant is BenQ’s focus on local manufacturing of projectors as BenQ is the only manufacturer in the country to drive Make-in-India initiative for projectors. According to him, almost half of the company’s projector portfolio is manufactured domestically.

BenQ India has also been making strong strides in smart classroom projects, with close to four lakh classrooms in the country having been rendered ‘smart’ with its products and solutions. While this is reported to be over 50 per cent of total base of government schools in the country, the company intends to add at least another 50,000 schools this year to further spread and consolidate its hold on the domain.

According to the BenQ India chief, the company has been executing a Delhi government awarded Delhi Smart Class project phase-I for as many as 7500 smart classrooms. On the other hand, the company is close to complete Smart rendering of around 4000 classrooms in Punjab and 2000 classrooms in Assam.

IFPs which is an essential part of BenQ’s Smart Classrooms initiative is another key focus area for its Make-in-India drive.

“We have increased the number of models of interactive flat panels that we are manufacturing in India,” Rajeev Singh told mediamen. “We have also added a monitor for the Make in India product line,” he said. “We will be starting our local production for Make in India from next month, April onwards. A completely new product line will be added to our Make in India initiative.”

In the commercial projection market, BenQ’s market share has been hovering around 25 per cent for a few years now- which makes it one of the leading brands in the country.
